Rétt misstum af gullinu - en silfrið okkar í Mid wales :)

Góða kvöldið.

Í gær lauk Mid wales rallinu og lukum við keppni í öðru sæti - aðeins 6 sek frá verðskulduðum sigurvegurunum Shaun Gardener og Ben Innes.

Í stuttu máli var þetta geðveikasta keppni sem undirritaður hefur keppt í.

Á fyrstu leið vorum við með nákvæmlega sama tíma og Shaun - sama gerðist á annari leið og því eftir 30km akstur á sérleiðum komum við inn í fyrsta þjónstuhlé leiðandi rallið sameiginlega.

Þriðja leið og við loksins náðum forystunni - 2 sekundur var reyndar allt sem það var en váááá hvað var haft fyrir þeim! Svo á fjórðu leið tók Shaun 7 tilbaka og því vorum við 5 undir fyrir síðstu leið! Nú var ALLT lagt undir, varadekki hent út og öllu lauslegu, bensín talið upp á dropa og skorið í dekk...

Því miður gerði undirritaður mistök snemma á leiðinni sem kostuðu 6-8sek -- eins og sjá má snemma á þessu vídeói:

 

 

 

Allaveganna - Shaun vann síðustu leiðina með 1 sek og því rallið með 6 sek. Tæpara verður það varla. Báðar áhafnir lögðu ALLT í keppnina og ýttu hvorum öðrum alveg fram á bjargbrúnina! Betra verður það ekki!

Í þriðja sæti kom svo Damien Cole og George Gwynn - áhöfnin sem fyrir rallið var búinn að lýsa því yfir að þetta yrði sér auðveldur sigur - enda á algjörum yfirburða bíl. Þeir urðu að éta hatt sinn og voru 24sek á eftir okkur.

Mid wales stages rallið um næstu helgi - Nú skal reyna að verja sigur okkar síðan í fyrra

Góða kvöldið.

 

Um næstu helgi fer fram Midwales stages rallið og munum við mæta þangað galvaskir til að reyna að verja sigur okkar í þessari sömu keppni síðan í fyrra. Eins og þá mun Andrew Sankey verma aðstoðarökumannssætið - en þetta rall er hans heimakeppni og fer fram eins og nafnið gefur sterklega til kynna - í wales.

Leiðarnar sem notaðar verða eru nær algerlega nýjar síðan í fyrra þannig að farið getur hvernig sem er. Við njótum þess heiðurs að vera fyrsti bíll á vegi og er það eitt og sér mikið verkefni.

Annar í rástöð er sigurvegari þessarar keppni 2007 - Shaun garndener - en hann ekur á Mitsubishi 5.9 eins og hann kallar bíl sinn - en þetta er boddý af evo 5 með evo 9 drifrás með HHMS full active kassa, WRC spec mitsubishi mótor sem vinur okkar Phil Marks smíðaði og alveg mögnuðu fjöðrunarkerfi þar sem afturdempararnir eru með meiri slaglengd en framdemparar á venjulegum evo!  The newly designed car comprises of HHMS active centre diff, modified body shell to accept Macpherson struts all round with increased travel, solid mounted rear diff HHMS design and fully adjustable rear arms. The body shell was extensively modified to allow extra suspension travel all round.

Þriðji í rásröð er svo margfaldur meistari í flestum hlutum breska rallisins, Damien Cole á Hunday accent WRC - mjög kvikur ökumaður á hræðilega öflugum bíl:)  - en hann endaði þessa keppni 16 sek á eftir Gardener árið 2007. Báðir eru þetta heimamenn og verður því sannarlega á brattann að sækja fyrir okkur - en ekkert annað stendur til að selja sig dýrt!

Heimasíða rallsins er: www.midwalesstages.co.uk og fer keppnin fram á sunnudag hjá okkur. Það eru vel á annað hundrað bílar skráðir - þar af 36 í "modern" - þar sem við erum listaðir.

Round five of the Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge witnessed the closest battle of the year so far, the hot, dry and dusty conditions in the mid-Wales forests provoking fierce competition, the final results seeing Daniel Barry and co-driver Martin Brady claim their fourth victory of the season. They crossed the line just ten seconds ahead of Simon Hughes/Craig Parry, with Nik Elsmore/Craig Drew a slender 0.7 seconds behind in third.

Starting and finishing at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells, the Severn Valley National Rally uses some of the best forest stages in the UK and is therefore regarded as a favourite by many competitors. Five of the 10 registered Evolution Challenge crews were entered, which although is less than previous years, the Mitsubishis still represented 30% of the National A field.

The event featured four stages before the first service halt, followed by another two before the second. It then concluded with the longest of the day – a 16-mile run through Radnor Forest.

The gauntlet was laid right from the word go, when Barry/Brady stopped the clocks on stage one just 1.6 seconds ahead of Hughes/Parry, who in-turn were 2.6 seconds ahead of Elsmore/Drew. But on the longer 12-mile stage two, Hughes/Parry reversed the position by emerging 2.2 seconds ahead, Barry reporting he couldn’t seem to find a rhythm and feeling below par due to a cold.

After the third stage Hughes/Parry were just 1.2 seconds ahead. Then, on stage four, Barry/Brady went on the offensive and came into service leading the Evo Challenge by three seconds, Hughes reporting that he needed to make some adjustments to his car’s suspension.

Elsmore/Drew were not for behind in third, with only a gap of 7.9 seconds between them and second place – even following a spin in SS3. For the first two stages they were being challenged by Owen Murphy/Dai Roberts, who had finally got to the bottom of their car’s previous electrical problems. However, they now found that the turbo was not providing enough boost and Murphy became frustrated not to be mixing it with the leading pair.

Adding to his problems was a missed note at the end of SS3 when the car slid wide, clouted a bank and seriously damaged the rear off-side suspension.  Although managing to limp back to the service halt, the prospect of taking a first win was now very much in question.

Icelandic Rally Champion Daniel Sigurdarson and co-driver Isak Gudjonsson were debuting their Evo X in the Evolution Challenge and, although treating this event as a learning exercise for their new car, their pace was more than respectable. However three spins on SS3 - as Sigurdarson tried to find the limits of his car’s handling - lost them over 30 seconds, the delay seeing them in fifth place at the service halt.

The next two stages saw Barry/Brady edge further ahead of Hughes/Parry, but not by much – in fact on stage six the leading trio of Evos were so close they were only separated by one-tenth of a second! Having set the fastest Evo Challenge time on SS5, Elsmore/Drew were closing the gap in third – and were ready to pounce if either of the leaders faltered.

Murphy’s car now had all it’s wheels pointing in the same direction, but to his dismay, it was still down on power and he looked unlikely to make any impression on the leaders. Therefore, at the second service halt, the time sheets showed Barry/Brady ahead by two seconds from Hughes/Parry, with Elsmore/Drew 15 seconds further back. It was therefore all down to the final stage in Radnor Forest.

Not far from the start Hughes/Parry spun and lost an agonising ten seconds before getting going again. Then, Barry/Brady did a similar thing, their car straddling a ditch momentarily – all of which meant that Elsmore/Drew were now right with them.

As the anxious crews checked each other’s times at the end of the stage, the clocks revealed that Barry/Brady had come out on top by just over 10 seconds. However, having recorded another fastest Evo Challenge time, Elsmore/Drew very nearly overhauled Hughes/Parry, just 0.7 second separating the second and third-placed crews at the finish.

Murphy/Roberts did the best they could in the afternoon and were relieved make it to the finish – picking up the Sunoco Spirit Award for their efforts, whilst Sigurdarson/Gudjonsson were delighted to record a trouble-free run and confirmed that their last-minute decision to enter was well worth the trip from Iceland.

“The hot and dusty conditions made this a tough event, but I’ve really enjoyed it”, said Barry. “We’ve had a great battle all day, which went right to the final stage and you just couldn’t afford to make a mistake. This is my fourth win in the Evo Challenge this season and things are now looking really good for the title.”

Barry and Brady also finished third overall and continues to lead the MSA National Gravel Championship by two points.

The UK Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge now takes a short break before the sixth round, which sees a return to the Welsh forests with the Swansea Bay Rally on 18th July.

The 2009 Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge is supported by Mitsubishi Motors UK, Ralliart, Pirelli tyres, Sunoco fuels, JR Motorsports, Speedline Corse wheels, Carbone Lorraine brakes, Walkinshaw Performance, Sparco racewear and PIAA lights - who sponsor the junior award for under 25-year old drivers.

Bogie scores first podium finish for JR Motorsports Team

The second round of the MSA British Rally Championship, the Pirelli International Rally, saw David Bogie and co-driver Kevin Rae bring their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X home in third place and score the first podium finish for JR Motorsports.

Team-mates Daniel Sigurdarson and Andy Bull finished sixth – a great achievement considering their similar Lico-sponsored car was only completed hours before the start - the combined results of both Mitsubishis seeing Team JRM Lico shoot into the lead of the British Team’s Championship.

Starting and finishing at Carlisle Racecourse, all of the event’s 12 timed special stages took place over the infamous gravel roads in Kielder Forest, the two stages on Friday night and the remaining 10 on Saturday providing a total of 102 competitive miles.

Following their fifth-place finish on the opening round, the JR Motorsports team had worked hard on the development of the new Mitsubishi – and their efforts paid off - as David reported the engine was far more responsive right from the start.

With a tough rally ahead of them and the reputation of Kielder Forest on their minds, David and Kevin opted for a cautious approach to the opening stage. Determined to push harder through the second, their plan was foiled shortly after the start when they caught the car ahead of them - which was slowed by a puncture - and they lost over 15 seconds in the prevailing dust before they were able to get past.

At the overnight halt the time sheets showed David and Kevin in sixth place and only 11 seconds away from a top three position. In the sister car, their team-mates were delighted that their brand new Evo X had run faultlessly and were pleased to be in tenth place.

Saturday started with a loop of four stages and David and Kevin were eager to carry on from where they left off the night before. Although it was close, they were able to fend off the competition and, with the demise of two cars ahead of them, they moved up to fourth before returning to Carlisle for the service stop.

Besides a set of new tyres and repairs to the exhaust system – which had been crushed on the rougher sections of the stages – the JRM car had run perfectly and hopes were high for a good result as David and Kevin embarked on the next loop, which was a repeat of the four stages tackled earlier.

After setting the fourth-fastest time on SS7, stage eight was stopped when rally leader Guy Wilks’ car caught fire. This forced organisers to abandon the next three stages as many of the following crews had used their fire extinguishers in an attempt to put out the blaze and could not continue without them. Cars were then sent back to Carlisle for a regroup before the event’s final two stages.

Now in third, the team were determined not to lose the chance of a podium place and a third fastest time in SS11 consolidated the position. But then, on the final stage, a large rock fractured the car’s rear differential casing and pulled out a driveshaft. Now, with only two-wheel drive, David and Kevin drove the final few miles holding their breath. But they made it, and crossed the line just 1.8 seconds ahead of a rapidly catching fourth-placed crew.

“I am so pleased to have got the car back to the finish and to secure third place”, said David. “It’s great to have scored the first podium finish in the British Championship, not just for me, but for the JR Motorsports team as well. I know they have worked hard on the car and its performance and reliability this weekend proves that the Evo X  has great potential.”

Besides a brief visit into a Northumberland ditch in the morning and also damaging the exhaust system, Sigurdarson and Bull’s car also proved reliable and they crossed the line in sixth place. The combination of the team’s two results launches Team JRM Lico into an 11-point lead in the Team’s Championship, with David and Kevin now third in the driver’s and co-driver’s standings.

The third round of the MSA British Rally Championship sees the surface change to asphalt, when teams head to Kelso for the Jim Clark Rally on 22nd & 23rd May.
